The Marker Assisted Breeding lab interfaces with field stations and partner laboratories across the world to provide DNA based analytical support for the seeds business. The team’s efforts are critical for the advancement of materials through the Variety Development Program and incorporating value added traits into DAS germplasm. The scope of impact spans across 9 different crop platforms and requires high levels of collaborative project support as well as consultation. The team has contributed to the successful launch of several seed products including SmartStax Corn, Refuge Advanced Corn, PowerCore Corn, Widestrike 3 Cotton, Healthy Oils in Canola and Sunflower as well as many new trait packages, including Enlist, that are critical to our commercial product longevity. Our team is proud of our high throughput automation systems that allow us to meet the ambitious growth goals of our company. We maintain a state of the art DNA extraction facility and were the first industry-based laboratory to miniaturize genotyping in a 1536 well format.

Incumbent-Specific Responsibilities

  • Production leader for the second half of the day, generally working from 11am-8pm for increased productivity. Critical responsibilities include assurance of daily plan completion, machine maintenance and error handling, and delivery of completed DNA plates to respective downstream customers.
  • Automation focal point for DNA Extractions, responsible for the evaluation of errors and determining appropriate course of action to remedy the situation and implement future preventative steps. Design and implement all development and optimized protocols for use on automation.
  • Laboratory Safety Focal Point for CB-022 lab, maintaining proper safety precautions in the lab and highlighting specific safety topics for the team.

General Responsibilities

  • Strictly adheres to all DAS safety requirements as set forth by the DAS Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Executes routine molecular and biological procedures to ensure timely completion of DNA Extractions for multiple downstream uses.
  • Complies with ISO 17025 Standards, and all other assay specific or pertinent quality requirements.
  • Operates and maintains basic analytical instrumentation, including sample grinders, balances, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, liquid handlers and other various equipment associated with molecular and biological analysis.
  • Performs the basic procedures required for sample preparation for analysis.
  • Adheres to defined protocols and checklists and successfully executes all production-approved DNA Extraction methods.
  • Works with various computer software packages, including sample receiving and LIMS, for data capture.
  • Maintains laboratory on a daily basis, including maintaining an inventory of essential laboratory supplies, ensuring that instrumentation is in proper working order, and that work area is maintained in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records.
  • Operates with a team-first attitude and willingness to assist in any laboratory endeavor that may be asked or requires additional support.

This position is located in Indianapolis, IN, USA. The qualified candidate should be able to work from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday and be amenable to a flexible work arrangement in the future if the nature of the work deems it appropriate.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • The qualified candidate must be able to work from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Friday.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and have the ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills are required.
  • Must have strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills – inspire others and lead them through influence.
  • A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Summary of Position Requirements

The MABL DNA Extraction sub-group is currently recruiting an enthusiastic Molecular Biology Technician to support nucleic acid research. Qualified candidates will be required to use technical and analytical skills to apply molecular biology techniques with a strong concentration on nucleic acid extraction using a variety of automation tools in a high throughput setting. Additionally, the candidates will be instrumental in development and implementation of new technologies to accelerate the use of high throughput nucleic acid extraction for molecular analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work experience in the agriculture industry is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of DNA based laboratory procedures and extraction techniques.
  • Experience in using LIMS packages, Microsoft Office suite, and laboratory automation is ideal.

Education:

  • Associate’s degree/4+ years military experience is required.
  • Associate’s Degree in Biotechnology, Biology, Molecular Biology, or other related field at an accredited educational institution.
