Production Research Technician

at our Marshalltown, IA facility.

The Production Research Technician will assist in developing and implementing research projects to support hybrid advancement and provide technical information and innovative solutions that improve quality, reduce cost and/or increase consistency of seed production. This position will train and supervise the activities of seasonal labor to ensure that studies are competed safely and according to protocol. The incumbent will work with other members of the Production Research Team to ensure functional excellence in all activities. The Production Research Technician will also assist with identifying and managing field research locations, collecting and recording research data and operating, and maintaining research equipment. The Technician will primarily work on corn projects but will support other crops as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the North American production research team to ensure that team goals are met.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of inbred characterization and optimization studies in North America and contra-season production locations.
  • Gather, record and upload accurate data from trials based on established protocols, and input collected data into systems for analysis.
  • Establish working relationships with grower cooperators, Seed Operations, and collaborating Research & Development (R&D) Stations.
  • Coordinate day-to-day activities and provide leadership and coaching of seasonal temporary labor, ensuring all activities completed in a safe manner.
  • Assist in seed packaging, planting, thinning, plot maintenance, pollinating, note taking, harvesting, drying, shelling, cleaning, treating and shipping.
  • Operate and maintain field/lab equipment and onboard computer systems.
  • Load and transport field equipment to off-site locations.
  • Be involved in production research and locations initiatives including Environment Health & Safety (EH&S).
  • Travel to outlying locations, research stations, laboratories, and winter nursery or production facilities as needed.
  • Comply with all DAS EH&S, DOT and location regulations & policies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated self-starter including the ability to solve problems and initiate projects.
  • Ability to operate and maintain field/lab equipment including onboard computer systems.
  • Familiarity with or ability to learn, technologies related to precision agriculture, electronic data collection and research databases.
  • Flexibility to work longer hours and during weekends during peak seasons.
  • Familiarity with Windows Operating Systems/Microsoft based computer skills (Excel, Word, Access)
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, be coachable, meet deadlines, pay close attention to detail, and fully embrace safety and regulatory compliance guidelines.
  • Candidate must have reliable transportation.
  • Current, valid driver’s license for State of Iowa, or must be able to obtain valid State of Iowa license prior to employment.
  • Ability to obtain Class A CDL.
  • Ability to obtain state pesticide applicator’s license.
  • A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Class A CDL
  • State pesticide applicator’s license
  • Prior agriculture experience
  • Strong background in agronomy and managing field and/or plant projects.
  • Experience in managing research projects, and seed production is a plus.

Education:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.
