JOB DESCRIPTION

SOS International LLC (SOSi) is seeking a Social Media/Web Content Manger for an overseas program. The Social Media/Web Content Manager will write feature news stories and provide comprehensive web management for our Public Affairs program, primarily through maintenance of the command’s official website and related social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Writes and edits publication-quality content for the website and other new media platforms. Such content will include news stories, news releases, biographies of key leaders, podcasts, email alerts, RSS feeds, video and still imagery and similar materials
  • Maintains and reports weekly statistics on website, social media usage and access with regards to social media sites
  • Creates and maintains a daily report on social media traffic outside of program social media pages based on hot media topics as identified by customer Marketing Director of Social Media Team Chief or designated government representative. Immediately report any spikes in social media traffic on those identified topics
  • Maintain high-quality web design of the program site, as well as its mirrored sites, with content in Dari and Pashto
  • Catalogue military Public Affairs video and still imagery and utilize segments in coordination with program or other designated subordinate to reach identified audiences through the websites and other new media platforms
  • Ensure cross-platform functionally, navigability, usability and accessibility for all of the platforms
  • Ensure that relevant materials are presented in a manner that reflects localized and language-specific cultural norms and perspectives, working in conjunction with the Media Desk Officers and translators
  • Remain current on and utilize the latest developments in web publishing techniques, as well as improvements in web-based applications and changes to file standards
  • Monitor and troubleshoot technical problems with the website and other new media platforms
  • Upload and publish completed web pages and new sections to the website as soon as they’re finished and approved by customer. Continuously monitor the social media sites to remove any propaganda or inappropriate content and maintain a weekly report of all instances in which the social media sites are used for such purposes
  • Inter-theater travel will be required

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • US citizenship with a valid, active DoD SECRET clearance
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Journalism, English, or a related field

OR

  • 6 years of military experience in military Public Affairs (MOS 46A, 46Q, 46R, 4341, 4302, 4313)
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of mass communications media and skill in applying principles and using methods in conducting an internal information program providing all employees with relevant news and necessary information
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques in planning and developing news stories and feature articles and skill in evaluating the news value or communications potential of visual material including photographs and illustrations. Skill in writing and editing news and feature articles, skill in interviewing a variety of people and gathering information from many different sources, Skill in basic photography, and skill in publication layout and design
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of print journalism sufficient to allow fast and accurate decision-making under intense deadline pressure; knowledge of every facet of newspaper production from overall design concept to circulation of finished product; technical knowledge of all associated skills sufficient to perform them or to direct those who do; and sufficient knowledge to modify methods or create new ones to meet unusual situations
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with written English usage and style, capable of detecting and correcting grammatical errors and of perceiving and correcting inappropriate tonality and innuendo
  • Must be sufficiently familiar with the structure, policies and traditions of the Army and other Military services to be able to avoid errors and inappropriate or inaccurate references. Must know technical information or know where to locate such information to a degree that enables him to ensure correctness of published information
  • Possess proficiency in relational database management tools such as Access or SQL Server
  • Proficient use in source management systems such as SVN (preferred) or CVS
  • Graduate of the Defense Information School Basic Public Affairs Specialist Course or equivalent
  • Possess excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with senior U.S. and Afghan Government leaders. Work products must be of General Officer or Senior Executive level quality

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in MySQL, Apache, and Linux hosting systems
  • Proficiency in Content Management Systems, especially Joomla and WordPress
  • Work effectively with HTML, DHTML, CSS, PHP, XML and scripting languages such as JavaScript and ASP; as well as knowledge of how to incorporate cross-platform web accessibility into this work

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Personnel will work in harsh and austere locations in Afghanistan
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects or packages of up to 25 lbs
  • Work environment is often stressful and detail-oriented
