The Harbor Beach site is the manufacturing facility for Spinosad and Spinetoram, active ingredients in several insecticides. An intern is assigned to a Mentor who outlines tasks, assists in role and project assignment, and project completion. Support in fermentation optimization is critical to the continuous improvement strategy of the Spinosyn business. Applied research and development are required to sustain and keep improving our current fermentation process in Harbor Beach Operations. The purpose of this internship project is to support multiple fermentation and process improvement experiments. This project requires a candidate with strong background and motivation to learn and develop skills in the microbial engineering applied R&D area. The fermentation technology learning opportunity will be oriented toward physiology, biology, microbiology, and bioengineering tools. The integration of process-biology-technology will be necessary to be successful in this project. The results of the project will be transferred and applied for fermentation development in the company’s Spinosyn business.
The internship opportunity focus in several areas:
Initially the intern will be required to complete bibliography research to fully understand the project background, followed by training in microbiology, fermentation technology, data analysis and presentation.
Participation is required in Experimental Expectation meetings with the Micro and Pilot Plant teams, as well as use of the micro lab, pilot plant and fermentation assets to achieve the fermentation optimization project goals.
Data treatment and presentation of results for the Spinosyn fermentation team final report is necessary, showing the principal results of the improvements during the project recommendations and implementation of the results
A yellow belt certification will be completed at the end of the project to provide six sigma experiences to the successful
Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biochemical/Chemical engineer background (Fermentation experience is a plus)
Logical proven solving skills, influential leadership experience, and excellent interpersonal skills
Ability to work in a team environment
Must have experience and proven proficiency in computer systems including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Developmental opportunities with other software and instruments will be provided
Currently pursuing at least a Bachelor’s degree in a engineering or biology related field.
Typical disciplines of interest are Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biochemical/Chemical engineering
Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.700/4.000 at current university
