Responsible for rapidly and accurately addressing routine media inquiries and public correspondence. Also responsible for proactively managing the districts social media accounts, monitoring district mentions, bolstering platform use and engaging with local, regional and national communities via social networks. This position reports to the Public Information Director. The Assignment Desk Editor will maintain a collaborative relationship with local media affiliates; and seek, identify and generate opportunities to promote IPS through various digital platforms.
The Assignment Desk Editor will be a skilled problem solver who maintains poise and flexibility in a fast-paced environment. Supports the Public Relations Division with digital content development and photography. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Constantly monitors media coverage of IPS and addresses media inquiries for information regarding IPS schools, central services. Receives and filters requests for media access to schools and dispatches appropriate resource for onsite facilitation.
Monitors social media and RSS feeds to identify trending topics regarding IPS and responds appropriately, when necessary. Manages content on districts social media platforms to proactively promote key messages and ensure consistent public engagement. Maintains knowledge of district schedules and events to ensure streamlined service from the Public Relations Division the districts news and information hub. Assists with generating content for the districts newsletters and blogs.
Researches and identifies trends, key group interests and public concerns. Helps facilitate efficient internal coverage of IPS information and events, performing initial research and scheduling newsgathering opportunities for school-based announcements and events. Helps process story pitches from schools and helps maintain an up-to-date editorial calendar. Assists principals, central services staff and other stakeholders seeking support with public relations.
Helps identify and assess various needs for marketing and public relations support across the Public Relations Division. Helps collect data and reviews materials for media relations use, as needed. Assists district Graphic Designer in planning graphics required for digital use, as needed. Assists with the development of district press releases, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Assignment Desk Editor should demonstrate knowledge of principles and practices of marketing, organizational communications, journalism, and public and community relations. Also demonstrates knowledge of principles and practices of composing and editing informational material. Must be highly skilled at crisis management techniques required to manage the release of information during emergency situations and media tactics, including interview techniques and preparation.
Demonstrates knowledge in various writing styles to inform, persuade and educate diverse audiences. Understands public information laws and policies regarding the dissemination of information to the public. Skills and experience for this position include: English composition, spelling, grammar and punctuation to produce news headlines, statements and other professional correspondence. Effectively communicating orally in both one-on-one and group situations.
Researching and identifying trends, key group interests and public concerns. Proficient use of computer devices, basic word processing software and standard office equipment. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field and three (3) years of experience, including work in a professional media setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated expertise with social media platforms. Graphic design skills are a plus. Typing speed of 50 wpm required. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group and public meeting situations to customers, clients, employees, and occasionally Board members. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to develop and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Advanced problem solving ability; able to quickly and successfully deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized and episodic situations.
