Position Overview:
Canon U.S.A. Inc. is seeking a qualified Counsel, with a focus on providing employment law advice and managing employment litigation. Litigation work would predominantly involve managing employment-related matters with some assistance in managing various non-employment commercial litigation matters. Mid-level attorney, who provides counsel to the company on legal rights and obligations pertaining to a specific legal area such as contracts, litigation, etc.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have responsibility for providing legal counsel and advice to our corporate/subsidiary and field HR and business groups related to all areas of employment law including, but not limited to: (a) Title VII, ADEA, FLSA, ADA, and FMLA, (b) employee relations matters (discipline, performance management, employment policies and handbooks), (c) drafting position statements to federal and state agencies, and (d) providing advice with respect to non-compete and restrictive covenants. The successful candidate must have the ability to manage a broad array of employment litigation in all of the above-referenced areas, as well as have an interest in managing some non-employment commercial litigation. This position also includes responding to third party subpoenas and garnishment orders. Most of the company’s litigation is directly handled by outside counsel, but is expected to be very closely and proactively managed by in-house counsel. The position requires an ability to actively manage multiple long term litigation matters simultaneously while also timely responding to day to day employment questions and issues.

Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school

Minimum of 5-7 years of experience providing employment counsel and advice and managing employment litigation in either a law firm or an in-house role

In-house experience with a large company legal department is strongly preferred, but not required

Must be admitted to a state bar, preferably the New York State Bar

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in team settings across various groups both within our Legal Division and throughout various Canon U.S.A. businesses and subsidiaries

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required , including the demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to HR and business groups
