Fermentation Technican – The Dow Chemical Company – Indianapolis, IN

has an exciting opportunity for a Fermentation Technician located in Indianapolis Indiana.

Bioengineering & Bioprocessing R&D is looking for a Fermentation Technician that will provide primary support in the daily operation of bioreactors (primarily microbial and plant cell) including the study of fermentations at MTP and shake flask scales.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Operate bioreactors to support the study and optimization of fermentations for the production of secondary metabolites
  • Daily operation of lab for fermentation studies – media preparation, lab and equipment maintenance, sampling, and sample analysis
  • Perform sample analysis that involves the use of HPLC, viscometer, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, and pH meter
  • Participate in weekend and off hour fermentation monitoring and sampling
  • Work on multiple projects in a highly collaborative environment
  • Develop a thorough understanding of equipment operation while consistently adhering to the highest level of safe operating discipline
  • Operate effectively in a laboratory environment through a basic knowledge of microbiological (including the ability to operate with good sterile technique) & biochemical laboratory principles
  • Develop an understanding of fermentation process development requirements
  • Order laboratory consumables. Handle receipt and stocking of materials and supplies
  • Work on multiple projects in a highly collaborative environment
  • Schedule and manage own work tasks in alignment with the overall team plan of work and project goals
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of basic computer skills including MS Office platforms such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and Statistical tools such as JMP
  • Identifies opportunities to further enhance the work process or experimental design based on personal experience and through deployment of improvement tools such as participation on Six Sigma project teams
  • Recognizes when results deviate from expectations
  • Makes disciplined use of lab data book and can contribute to technology reports with experimental data



  • Associates degree in biological sciences, engineering or related discipline is required
  • Minimum of 6 months of hands on aseptic technique experience is required


  • High level if independence and initiative is desired
  • Experience with shake flask monitoring systems (RAMOS and PreSens) is highly desired
  • Hands on experience with stirred tank bioreactors desired
  • Minimum of 3 month hand on experience with bioanalyzers (NOVA biomedical and Yellow Springs instruments)
