Dow AgroSciences (DAS) SEEDS Canola Parent Seed Production Center in Vernon, BC, Canada
is seeking a Field Technician to support the
parent seed production. This job is essential for the production and management of high quality canola parent seed lines through the use of advanced technologies and industry leading proficiency.
Primary Responsibilities include:
The incumbent will be a member of the DAS SEEDS Canola Parent Seed Team under the direction of the Canola Parent Seed Planner/Site Leader. Interfacing with other DAS SEEDS members, the individuals’ responsibilities will include
technical duties such as:
Land preparation in the spring, including field planning, seed planting, field and plot/tent site maintenance throughout the summer, including spraying of pesticides, irrigation management, roguing, harvest of production fields and tent sites and fall land preparation.
Field operations includes the use of large and small plot equipment requiring adherence to EH&S principles at all times in operating, handling, maintenance, loading/unloading and hauling of this equipment.
Operation of an Approved Conditioner site:
Working under a licensed Operator, condition parent seed lots, manage inventory, product integrity and quality sampling, ensuring proper storage and recording of data.
Ensure proper records are kept.
This includes data on both field and tent sites in the production program as well as activities within the facility.
Record and enter data into SeedPro on all field activities. In addition, maintain compliance with seed inventory at the plant, equipment maintenance and EH&S documentation.
Facility and Equipment:
Sample, treat and set up seed in preparation for seeding.
Work as part of a team to manage housekeeping activities and general facility management activities.
Responsibilities also include equipment maintenance activities and record keeping, adhering to EH&S principles.
Identify opportunities for additional responsibilities to assist agronomists in project development. In addition to practicing Responsible Care in the Seeds and Traits program, identify responsibilities to lead EH&S initiatives.
Manage summer students with day to day activities as well as managing casual worker activities.
Maintain current Standard Operating Procedures and write new SOP/Pre Task Analysis Cards as needed to improve field and site efficiencies and to provide a safe environment for all to work in.
Expected participation within DAS SEEDS Group:
Participate in daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly planning meetings with Production Agronomists to review and plan field and site activities.
Participate in DASCI Safety and Training Program and Meetings; participate in EH&S training and maintain documentation according to ODMS.
Follow EH&S policies and procedures for all field and site related issues to ensure safe working environment for all staff.

Consistently deliver high quality parent seed to customers.
Provide technical expertise that will permit the DAS SEEDS Team to complete projects in a timely, efficient and effective manner.
Work in close collaboration with DAS SEEDS Team members as well as external contacts.
Operate safely at all times.
This position requires an individual with excellent interpersonal skills as they will be working with many people who have differing needs.
Ability to facilitate complex problem solving through good organization, management skill, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other computer skills.
Valid, Canadian driver’s license, with a Heavy Trailer Endorsement.
Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without company support or sponsorship.
Working knowledge of plant growth and canola parent seed production programs is an asset.
Knowledge of fundamentals of managing a registered seed establishment would be beneficial.
A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
A college diploma in Agronomy, Ag Business, or other related field of study is preferred.
