Online Quality Control Technician – Allen Press, Inc – Lawrence, KS

Job Summary:
Candidate performs various quality checks on online version(s) of article content to ensure that it matches the source material and that no information was lost during the process of loading the content into the online hosting platform. Candidate is also responsible for tracking, reviewing and responding to quality control issues related to the processing and loading of content online.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform job duties and conducts self in accordance with Allen Press, Inc. core values.
  • Perform quality control checks on online content:
  • Check for content accuracy and completeness.
  • Check accuracy of online-only functionality.
  • Check content notification features (e.g. RSS feeds, eAlerts).
  • Modify XML and other online files according to QC criteria.
  • Push the content from the staging environment to the live one.
  • Help QC new site implementations and functionality as necessary.
  • Communicate with various third-party aggregators (e.g. PubMed).
  • Evaluate quarterly reports to confirm delivery of content to third-party aggregators.
  • Update job progress with department tracking system(s).
  • Maintain a manual of standard operating procedures and quality checklists.
  • Evaluate and take corrective action when necessary; make appropriate recommendations and set timetable for improvement and corrections.
  • Educate and instruct department personnel in recommended quality procedures. Confirm these procedures are being maintained.
  • Consult with management and personnel on better operational procedures to improve overall quality and efficiency.
  • Function as an information source for departments when critical quality issues arise.
  • Prepare productivity and quality evaluation reports and submit them to the department manager.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe work environment by reporting any actual or potential hazards to the HR Safety Coordinator, the Safety Committee, or senior management. Non-Essential Functions:
  • Ability and willingness to cross-train and cross-work in other departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Experience/Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some post-secondary training preferred.
  • Basic PC/Windows file management and word processing skills required.
  • Working knowledge of and hand-on experience with basic file and graphic formats.
  • Working knowledge of XML required; background with the NLM Tag Suite preferred.
  • Experience with text editing programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, TextPad).
  • Awareness of typesetting and printing process preferred.
  • Knowledge of web publishing standards preferred.
  • Attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle constant flow of incoming materials and meet tight production deadlines.
  • Maintain a high degree of work integrity, quality foremost.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills in a technical atmosphere, especially understanding of patterns, workflows, systems, methods, and cause and effect.
  • Willing to follow and understand established procedures; receptive to guidance and instruction.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
  • Desire to participate in on-going training as technology changes.
  • Ability to adapt to change and to seek constant improvement of systems and methods.
  • Ability to promote safety procedures and assist in maintaining a hazard free work environment

Cognitive/Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Ability to remain stationary, sitting or standing, in order to perform essential functions, such as typing, data entry, sorting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to remain focused for extended periods of time in order to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to keyboard accurately and to control a computer mouse.
  • Ability and willingness to work in excess of 40 hours per week as needed.
