Dow AgroSciences has an exciting and challenging opening for a Package Engineering Specialist. The Package Engineering Specialist reports to the Formulation and Packaging Global Improvement Leader and is responsible for all aspects of the design and development of package systems for products, intermediates and raw materials in the North American region.
The role uses market and customer feedback data, cost performance and knowledge of the regulatory framework to improve customer appeal, environmental attributes, corporate image and anti-counterfeiting features of the entire product package. Identify improved technology and methods to close gaps, and proactively seek opportunities to raise the bar on package performance.
The role is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Key responsibilities include:
Support product launches by developing package specs, assembly instructions, certifications, artwork templates and input on truck and container loading.
Provide support for storage stability studies.
Initiate and deliver projects to standardize packaging components or optimize the cost of packaging while enhancing image, quality, recyclability and performance.
Design package components that will ensure user safety, product and environmental protection, optimize cost, and ensure integration into production facilities.
Use creativity, knowledge of packaging technology to improve packaging cost and customer appeal.
Work with marketing teams to develop package design and anti-counterfeiting strategies, which meet or exceed customer expectations.
Work with Artwork Development personnel to assure packaging components are compatible with printing and labeling needs. Develop label material specifications and label templates for each package configuration.
Provide technical coaching for other functions such as Artwork Development & Purchasing, and work with Purchasing to select and qualify packaging suppliers.
Provide direction to packaging suppliers on new and revised packaging specifications.
Work with third party manufacturing plants to support new product launches.
Provide technical input to resolve package quality issues arising in manufacturing or in the supply chain.
Provide consulting to logistics, distribution centers and plants on blocking, bracing & securement of finished products in trucks, containers and rail
Represent Packaging on North American Packaging Steering Team and External Industrial Organizations as needed.
Bachelor’s degree or higher
3 or more Years of industry experience in package engineering
2 or more years of experience working across functions, cultures or time zones.
Ability to travel up to 10% support startups, packaging material and supplier qualifications and resolution of packaging quality complaints.

Expertise in a broad range of rigid and flexible packaging materials and technologies
Must have a working knowledge of packaging regulations and testing methods relevant to the Agricultural Industry (eg. UN, EPA, ISPM-15, FIFRA).
A bachelors / master degree in Packaging Science is preferred, although other technical subjects can be considered
Expertise in analyzing data and agreeing on a actionable, prioritized opportunity list with commercial and functional stakeholders
Six Sigma certification and experience with Lean Manufacturing principles and 5S is desirable
Experience in the agricultural industry and with the regulations affecting agricultural products and chemical packaging and distribution is preferred
