NJ Advance Media, New Jersey’s leading source of local news and information, is seeking a skilled, experienced digital journalist to cover the City of Newark, a beat fertile with political and human stories that abound in the state’s largest city. As our Newark reporter, you will leverage your strong reporting background, story-telling skills and news judgment to break news and deliver penetrating beat coverage and enterprise work. In addition to the Newark beat, we have other openings for Local Reporters covering a range of topics and regions in northern and central New Jersey.

NJ Advance Media, which provides content to NJ.com, The Star-Ledger and other affiliated newspapers, is a nimble and innovative digital news company, with an energetic culture and state-of-the-art facilities and tools. To excel as a Local Reporter, you will be a driven, dynamic journalist with the ability to deliver topical, impactful reporting every day. You should be able to proactively identify stories in your assigned area and respond quickly, keeping the quality of content consistent and engaging. You’ll need to be at ease in a self-directed environment and eager to hit the ground running. Because we are an online, daily operation, you also will need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, while using all of the tools of a true digital journalist. You should be someone who excels and thrives under pressure, and is able to produce quality work regardless of the deadline. Because this is a job built around real-time reporting, you must be quick on your feet and strong with grammar and self-editing. You also must be adept at social media and committed to engaging with your audience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Gather information and write journalistically sound news elements for use in all media platforms, existing and future, that is: balanced and factual; timely and topical; and, well –sourced and contextually correct
  • Learn and employ all techniques for effective digital “beat-blogging” reporting across all platforms
  • Post frequent and incrementally posting throughout the day
  • Engage in story aggregation and topical link-posting
  • Monitor and engage in reader comment streams on nj.com impact pages
  • Elevate comments into new posts when appropriate
  • Interact on social media platforms, with story shares, objective commentary, promoting your topic and news organization’s content initiatives
  • Effectively employ various means for monitoring audience interest and competitors’ posting on your topic, including setting up Google alerts, Twitter and RSS feeds
  • Maintain operational communication with editor and, when applicable, production center,
  • Understand and use hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for direct-to-web production and engagement, including but not limited to:
  • a posting photographs and short videos to the web and any internal production systems
  • remote web reporting, using laptops and smart phones
  • Understand and use our news organization’s audience traffic tracking systems and analytical reports
  • Meet production deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned.

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL
    REQUIREMENTS:

    Extensive computer use required. Some travel required. Ability to work flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.
