The National Geographic Technology team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work on systems that support our consumer facing websites like nationalgeographic.com and Your Shot. In this role you’ll work on new architecture components and features that enable us to deliver world-class content at scale to millions of people daily.

We’re looking for a curious problem solver who is comfortable working on or learning multiple technology stacks. In this role you’ll have the opportunity to solve various problems from caching to DevOps to building personalized web content feeds.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical subject matter expert for our web site and web application technologies.
  • Design and implement technical solutions.
  • Monitor and diagnose operational issues with our web site and web applications.
  • Collaborate with peers to continuously improve development processes and approaches.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to design and build best of breed products.

Qualifications

  • BA or BS Degree – Computer Science or related degree
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing large multi-tier web sites or web applications.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with multiple programming languages and related frameworks and libraries – Python and Java.
  • Experience with Javascript libraries and frameworks like React, Angular, and Backbone
  • Experience with CMS platforms like AEM, Drupal, or WordPress.
  • Experience using and developing RESTful APIs using JSON, RSS, NewsML and other API formats.
  • Experience with event-based and message-driven distributed systems eg. Celery, RabbitMQ etc.
  • Experience with various data stores and related topics – NoSQL and RDBMS – eg. Memcached, Redis, PostgreSQL, MySQL etc.
  • Experience with dependency management, build & release and automation tools (Pip, Maven, Jenkins/Bamboo, Puppet, Docker etc.)
  • Extensive experience with AEM preferable
  • Extensive experience with Django
  • Ability and desire to tackle new projects and learn new skills.
  • Ability to lead technical conversations with Product, Business and Ads leadership, in addition to Engineering and Support/Operations teams.
  • Conveys highly technical concepts and information in written form to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • The ability to work on multiple concurrent projects is essential. Strong self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a team-oriented individual, energetic, result & delivery oriented, with a keen interest on quality and the ability to meet deadlines.
