(This was originally written in October 2013, as the country was recovering from the Great Recession. But, the essence of it is so applicable and resonant for today’s times, as we are going through the COVID-19 pandemic, that we want to share it again).
Life has a funny way of being highly unpredictable and usually when you least expect it or feel you can handle it. Many of us on the FlexJobs team have been in one way or another affected by heartbreak, tragedy, or downright difficult and challenging times this year, either directly in our own lives or in the lives of those we love.
On a global scale, we all see the struggling that others are going through, which is frankly unprecedented and sometimes quite soul shattering. As I write this, my own heart is heavy for my team, for my family, for my friends, and for everyone across the world as we all face such uncertain, humbling, and troubling times. They say the eyes are the window to the soul and in many I look into, I see that the burden being carried around is a heavy load. From the depths of my being, from that place of pure humanity, I wish that it would just dissipate and allow for everyone to at least find a place of contentment—a moment of happiness in the sun.
In my searching, not only through my own tribulations but also through watching others, I have been able to witness the good that is inherently living in all of us. We all have that little light that we can pass on just through a smile, a simple gesture, a kind word, or pure understanding silence. I have witnessed it personally as well as watched it firsthand between perfect strangers. It is through simple acts of kindness that two people with burdens can, if only for a second, feel the support, caring, and understanding of another.
These past few weeks our team has had to dig deep to find the inspiration to see the good in the world, as we have strained under the burdens that we carry and that we see others carrying. It is through this digging that we have found and awakened our inner strength, hope, and faith to keep up the good fight, not only for ourselves and each other, but for our loved ones and everyone who reads, subscribes, or visits the site. Through our dedication to each other and the pure love that has been exhibited in our times of need, we have been able to fully appreciate the movement of flexible work as well as continue to provide you, our users, with opportunities to experience and live the same amazing work culture and environment we are all so very thankful for.
As you go out into the world, keep in mind that the simplest of gestures can make or break another person’s day. Kindness is contagious and in the words of Kid President, “Love changes everything. Fill the world with it.”
