Here’s what Rachel Adkins, a FlexJobs Career Coach in the Dallas Fort-Worth Metroplex area, has to say!
Why do you enjoy being a career coach?
Helping people and education have always been passions of mine. As a career coach, I’m able to combine these passions during my sessions as I educate clients on the job search process. Most people aren’t aware of the intricacies and the ever-evolving process involved in searching for a new job or changing career paths. Teaching clients how to navigate this often unfamiliar territory and helping them gain the skills necessary to be successful in landing their dream job is what brings me the most satisfaction.
What’s your educational and career background?
I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management and a master’s degree and Specialist in Education degree in Counseling and Human Systems. I have 11 years of coaching experience, six in the field of career coaching and five in the field of employee benefits consulting. I have a broad range of experience with many different types of clients, including college students, outplacement clients, and both older and younger job seekers.
Do you have any specialties or types of clients you particularly enjoy working with?
My favorite type of client to work with is one who knows the type of job/career they’re seeking but isn’t familiar with the process and steps necessary to land the job. I also enjoy working with career changers, and helping clients to identify their skills, values, and interests, and aligning them with careers that may be a good fit.
What’s one thing you want every job seeker to know?
Keywords, keywords, keywords! You can have the best formatted resume in the world, but if you’re not utilizing keywords from the job description on your resume, your resume may never land in the hands of a human being! As painstaking as the process may be, it’s important to tailor your resume for each job you apply for.
Why do you think career coaching is helpful for job seekers?
Most people are not aware of applicant tracking systems (ATS), how to go about searching for jobs in the “hidden job market,” how to tailor their resume, and how to best answer interview questions. Career coaches are experts in these areas, so speaking with one can really help to accelerate your job search.
What’s one thing you can’t live without in your home office?
