For many, the “traditional” version of retirement (daily golf games, leisurely travel, or spending lots of time with grandchildren), is not exactly what they’re looking for. Many retirees, and those planning their retirement, don’t want their golden years to mean the end of professional pursuits.
In 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that approximately 40% of those aged 55 and over were working or actively looking for work. That number was predicted to grow by the end of 2024, with a total of 41 million people over the age of 55 (with 13 million over the age of 65) engaged in the labor force.
A different survey found that 27% of those currently planning their retirement planned to work part-time during their golden years. And of those who were already retired, 19% were working part-time.
Though some retirees continue working or return to work because they have to for financial reasons, many people choose to work in their retirement years because they want to use their hard-earned professional skills while engaging their minds on intellectually stimulating pursuits.
But finding a job that engages your professional skill set and lets you work part-time while you pursue your passions isn’t always easy to find. However, with FlexJobs, many retirees find intellectually stimulating and professional jobs that also let them work flexibly so they can make the most of their “part-time” retirement.
Here’s What Some Retired and Semi-Retired Members Say About FlexJobs
James D., part-time data collector at RetailData
Having a flexible schedule has become more important to me at this time in my life. I can get my work done and have more free time with less worry. I can also better schedule my time for projects outside of work and can take days off whenever I want as long as I get my work done first. Finding flexible work has made me rethink early retirement because I feel semi-retired with the schedule I now have. If you’re self-motivated and tired of the hassle of a set schedule, get a FlexJobs membership.
Caren S., part-time online teacher at EF – Education First
About four years ago, I retired from teaching and was enjoying the good life. Recently, I decided to see if I could pick up a part-time job. So far, I’ve been enjoying my new remote job because the convenience of working from home on a part-time basis is the perfect fit for my lifestyle.
Teresa E., part-time child assessor at WestEd
This job is an excellent fit for my skills as a retired teacher. While I am looking for a full-time, permanent position in another field, this new position through FlexJobs will fill in the income gap until then.

FlexJobs is more than worth the money. I was able to find a part-time, remote job at a great, credible company. The resume and job tips, as well as company ratings, were invaluable. Thanks, FlexJobs, for making my transition from retiree to employee a lot easier.

I wanted to work part-time as I am now semi-retired, but I still enjoy helping people with their technology problems. A flexible job will help my family be more secure, and I’ll have more flexibility in my work schedule. Give FlexJobs a try. It sure helped me find what I was looking for.

Wonderful resource! I appreciate that all jobs posted on FlexJobs have been vetted as authentic. This added security is a huge relief during the job-search process. I retired early but soon realized, at age 53, I still needed a job to keep me current but on my own terms. I love that I’m able to work on projects that fit my schedule and work from home but maintain a connection to my professional network. I’m no longer squeezing time in between work to accomplish my personal responsibilities.
Deanna W., part-time writer at Coda Concepts
I love this site and FlexJobs’ philosophy. I’m a retired 69-year-old woman with mobility issues. When I subscribed to FlexJobs, I found a work-from-home job, which keeps me from missing working so much and provides small, additional income.
Betty S., full-time transcriptionist at Net Transcripts
I have great regard for FlexJobs and often recommend it to friends seeking employment, especially those seeking part-time and telecommuting jobs. I found a great job for myself through FlexJobs to keep my skills fresh and my life full in retirement.
Ana K., teacher at Outschool
I found three possible jobs on FlexJobs and chose the one that was the best fit. I have been looking [on other sites] for months and not found anything like this. I found my new job in less than a week! This was the perfect site for me, as I have RA and fibromyalgia. I had to retire from teaching, and I really missed interacting with the children and families. Now FlexJobs has given me back a piece of me that I missed. I can’t thank you enough!
Jim R., part-time digital marketing administrator, Kaul Sales Partners
I began searching for flexible work after I’d been retired for a couple of years. In addition to supplementing my income and keeping my mind and skills sharp, an added benefit is that I don’t have to leave home to work, and can plan my schedule around other activities. I was beginning to wonder if I’d be able to find suitable telecommuting work and now I know it can be done.
