This month FlexJobs is proud to feature and donate to United Way.

Each month during 2020, FlexJobs is highlighting a fantastic nonprofit organization that we feel strongly about, and we will be donating $6,000 throughout the year! Come back each month to read about our selected nonprofit and see how they are helping to shape a better world.

This month, we’re donating to United Way, a group dedicated to improving individual lives through the power of community.

United Way is the largest privately-funded nonprofit in the world. With 2.6 million volunteers around the world, United Way helps individuals lead better lives. By providing support in three main areas—education, income, and health—United Way mobilizes communities to help all its individuals succeed.

From Humble Beginnings

In 1887, Frances Wisebart Jacobs, the Rev. Myron W. Reed, Msgr. William J. O’Ryan, Dean H. Martyn Hart, and Rabbi William S. Friedman joined together and raised $21,700 ($375,921.71 in 2020). They distributed the funds to 10 local charities and continued to work together to coordinate relief services, refer people for help and services, and make emergency grants to people in need.

The Need Continues

Nearly 130 years later, United Way continues to provide coordinated efforts to communities. The goal: to help individuals overcome the obstacles that stand in the way of a quality life. To that end, United Way helps local agencies provide services such as:

• Job training
• Literacy
• Financial management
• Credit counseling
• Tax filing assistance
• Disaster response services

The Pandemic Response

Every year United Way helps over 61 million individuals connect with and receive supportive services. This year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented need for support and information.

Currently, United Way is receiving between 200% and 400% more requests for all types of assistance. As a result, they have created the COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund.

This fund will provide support to communities around the globe to help those in need access food, shelter, and other assistance. Locally, the funds will help nonprofits provide:

• Information on how to get tested for COVID-19
• Connections with health insurance for those who need it
• Help for local agencies providing meals or stocking food pantries
• Financial assistance to pay rent or other outstanding bills

Approximately 95% of every donation made to the COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund will go directly to those in need to help people get information, food, and shelter.

The demand for assistance has never been greater. FlexJobs is proud to donate to United Way this month to help them support their COVID-19 response and continue their mission of helping individuals through community action.
