FlexJobs believes wholeheartedly in paying it forward whenever we can, both as a company and as individuals. While we are proud to support a variety of nonprofit organizations throughout the year, we are also committed to encouraging team members to spend “on-the-clock” time each month to pay it forward in their own ways.
As a fully remote and flexible company since 2007, FlexJobs is passionate about giving staff the flexibility they need to volunteer in their communities, and we’re excited to show you what our amazing team has been doing to give back.
This month we’re featuring Jessica Howington, Content Strategy Manager at FlexJobs, who works with several organizations that are making a real difference.
What organization are you involved with, and how did you choose it?
I’ve been involved with Blue Star Families since 2016, American Corporate Partners (ACP) since 2019, and Friend to Friend since 2019. I chose Blue Star Families and ACP for their work in the military community, specifically for their support for spouses. I chose Friend to Friend because of the field and my close experience with abuse. I wanted to help advocate for others and help them learn to advocate for themselves, which is incredibly hard after living through abuse.
How much time do you devote to your volunteer work?
It really varies. Some months I only volunteer for an hour or so. Other months, it may be between 10-20 hours.
What do you do for the organization(s)?
I’m currently volunteering as a social media manager, mentor, and domestic violence and sexual assault advocate.
What’s the best part of it for you?
First and foremost, helping others succeed and thrive is the best part. Secondly, the learning and personal growth are important to me.
How does flexible work help you volunteer?
Flexible work helps me volunteer by giving me the time and autonomy to balance my professional and personal life. Remote work and flexible scheduling allow me to volunteer when organizations need me and allow me to move my schedule around to meet everyday demands while incorporating volunteer hours and work. I couldn’t do this without the flexibility I have in my role, and I simply wouldn’t have the time if I had a commute.
I also believe in a human collective and that what we all put out into the world affects us all. Putting that good energy out there through volunteering only helps spread more love, and we all need love and kindness in our lives.
How has your volunteering role changed during the pandemic?
Some of the person-to-person activities have scaled back for safety reasons, but many of the activities were able to be moved online (or already were!) and are still keeping everyone connected and moving forward.
Pay It Forward With Kindness
Giving back puts kindness into your community at a time when everyone needs all the support they can get. No matter where you are on your career path, finding the time to give back to your community will start a cycle of paying it forward that can continue for many years to come.
