This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Library Technician 3 position for the Library at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position performs copy, complex, and original cataloging of electronic resources, monographs, and integrating resources for all RDA media types collected by the library. This includes resources in English as well as foreign languages. The position may also perform some serials cataloging, and may assign Library of Congress call numbers, Library of Congress subject headings, and perform name authority work.

This position:

  • Is responsible for cataloging electronic resources issued alone or in series and sets, either by searching online catalogs and lists or by receiving notifications when new titles are published. These resources include OSU Extension and Oregon Sea Grant publications as well as e-books published by commercial vendors.
  • Assists with project work such as withdrawals, shifting, and integrated library system (ILS) cleanup, and creates name authority records.
  • Requires the ability to work with details, learn a variety of complex routines, and assimilate knowledge into an understanding of how the Libraries function in order to solve problems and improve procedures so that one may organize and carry out operations independently.
  • Works with many staff in other departments: Circulation staff for Kindle books, reserves, holds, and work orders; Acquisitions staff for order records, DDA purchases, rushes, reserves, and purchased e-books; Interlibrary loan staff for purchased PDFs; the Graduate school and OSU students for theses and dissertations and their embargoes; Emerging Technology Services staff for repository issues, changes, and data archiving.

Position Duties

60% Complex and original cataloging: Performs complex copy cataloging and original cataloging of monographs and integrating resources including the assignment of Library of Congress call numbers and Library of Congress subject headings, as well as name authority work. Performs such cataloging on rush and reserve materials, DVDs, CDs, theses, dissertations, and foreign language materials. The LT3 assists Acquisitions staff with cataloging shelf-ready and gift books by upgrading minimal level records to full level as needed. Unusual or atypical materials may be referred to a faculty cataloger for assistance.

30% Electronic resources cataloging and maintenance: This LT3 is responsible for cataloging electronic resources issued alone or in series and sets, and keeps them up-to-date in the ILS by using RSS feeds and by checking publisher websites to catalog and make electronic resources available in a timely manner. Electronic resources include OSU Extension and Oregon Sea Grant publications as well as e-books published by commercial vendors. Performs cataloging on e-books, streaming videos, and Kindle e-books and downloads and processes monthly batch loads of electronic resources.

10% Other Duties As Assigned: Creates NACO proposals, assists with catalog maintenance projects, keeps current with changes that develop in the OCLC and Alma systems, national cataloging rules, and NACO policies and rules. Maintains current procedures by updating the procedures on the wiki, participates in various library committees, and devises new routines and procedures in conjunction with others. Provides lead work for up to 2 students.

Departmental Expectations: As a member of the OSU Valley Library and the Resource Acquisitions and Sharing Department (RAS), time will be spent in unit, departmental and library wide meetings, contributing to discussions and decision-making, working on special projects as assigned. Staff must demonstrate professional behavior and model good work habits at all times (i.e., avoid personal phones calls while on duty, stay on task, sign and date all written communication, etc.). Maintain individual work calendar, honor appointments, respond courteously and accurately to emails, phone messages, and other communications within a reasonable time frame. May provide backup for other staff during their absences.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree plus two years of current (within 5 years) experience in a Library; OR 4 years of current library experience. AND Advanced proficiency in multiple library specific computer applications, e.g., integrated library systems, database applications, institutional repository; content management systems. Some positions may also require in-depth knowledge of specialty area(s), e.g., original cataloging, complex copy cataloging, serials management, ILL management, government documents, image resources, music.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Experience with copy cataloging in a variety of formats using OCLC Connexion
  • Requires ability to work in a flexible and changing environment; including adapting to changes in responsibilities and duties.
  • A strong customer service orientation is required.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification
  • Familiarity with Resource Description and Access (RDA), and Ex Libris’ Alma ILS
  • Reading ability in more than one language
  • Knowledge of original cataloging
  • Familiarity with an academic library environment

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

This position is in a fragrance free office/library environment with exposure to fluorescent lighting. This includes work with damaged materials that may include, but are not limited to dust, dirt, and on occasion, mold and pests. The work is occasionally physically demanding, with periods of standing, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling loaded book carts. Much of the work schedule involves working at a computer workstation. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8AM – 5PM.

This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
