Some people who aren’t familiar with all the benefits of remote work may think that, while you can work from home, it’s not really a career. They may believe there’s no way to move into management if you’re not in the office.
Michael M. knows that remote work doesn’t mean staying put on the career ladder. He’s been working remotely since 2011 and, during that time, has used FlexJobs to locate three remote jobs. Michael doesn’t think he can ever go back to office life. He found that remote work lets him live a flexible life, and helped him advance to a career in management.
Never Going Back
Michael took advantage of his FlexJobs membership when his last job was downsizing. All of the employees were required to relocate. As an existing remote employee, if Michael wanted to stay at the company, not only would he have to work in the office, he would also have to move to a new state. However, after nine years of remote work, Michael knew he did not want to return to an office.
“I originally looked for remote work to spend more time with my kids and to cut down on my commute time. I was commuting one hour each way at the time,” he explains. Once he switched to remote work, he found that he enjoyed the work-life balance remote work offers. He no longer had a commute, could schedule events and appointments in the middle of the day, and found working at home more relaxing.
In his current role, Michael has “complete flexibility with where I work from, so I am still able to spend time with family and have the work-from-home benefits I have become accustomed to having. If I have to go back to an office in the future, it will be very difficult!”
Achieving Career Growth
Michael is a long time FlexJobs user and says that a membership is “absolutely worth the money.” The value, he says, comes from the verified job listings. “Knowing that the job listings that are sent to your profile each day are trusted and verified remote jobs makes the job hunt much easier. The trust in those listings and knowing that they are valid roles (and not scams) is alone worth the cost of a membership.”
He also says that choosing remote work doesn’t mean giving up career growth or advancement. Over the last nine years, Michael has learned that, “it is possible to build a career and continue to be an important member of the management team, even while working remotely.”
What’s more, he adds, “If you find the right company, working remotely is even encouraged and accepted and not viewed as a negative.”
Michael knows that a flexible job doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your career. It is possible to have a career that offers advancement and work-life balance. Join FlexJobs today and find a job that lets you thrive professionally and have time for your personal life, too.
