Finding your flow is a great way to describe striking just the right balance between your work and your personal life.
It’s all about hitting your sweet spot—in other words, achieving just the kind of work-life harmony we’re focusing on in this week’s FlexJobs success story.
Emily S. is the latest of many FlexJobs subscribers who’ve found job search success and better harmony between work and personal aspirations.
On the lookout for a meaningful job that also provided supplemental income, Emily transitioned from being a full-time, stay-at-home mom to working a 100% remote job.
Using the job search tools that come with a FlexJobs membership, Emily found contract work as a virtual assistant for BELAY, a faith-based virtual solutions company that provides virtual assistant and business management services, bookkeeping, and WordPress maintenance.
Transitioning Back to to Work
A resident of Toledo, Iowa, Emily was ready to transition from full-time, stay-at-home parenthood to a meaningful career that was 100% remote. “I starting looking for a flexible job when my family needed some additional income,” she said. “I was ready to move from being a full-time, stay-at-home mom to being back in the workplace.”
At the same time, Emily wanted remote work that also was meaningful and rewarding. “I was ready to start growing personally and professionally,” she said. “However, I did not want to sacrifice any time commuting, so having a 100% telecommute job was a priority. I still wanted to have my family as my priority.”
Better Work-Life Harmony with a Remote Job
Emily, who’s a member of Gen X, had specific goals in mind from the outset of her job search. She’s been able to meet those goals with work flexibility. “Having a flexible job allows me to serve my family, pursue creative endeavors, and develop professionally,” she said. “I am able to create harmony in my life by having a flexible job.”
With better work-life balance, Emily said she’s able to “take care of my children when they need me while still serving my clients with excellent service.”
Thanks to her remote job, Emily’s also better able to hit two big marks in her personal life: volunteering and travel. “[I’m] able to volunteer during working hours since my flexible job can be worked at any time,” she said. “I also am able to travel while taking my job with me, creating memories with my family while still growing in my career.”
A New Career Perspective in a Rural Area
To land her virtual assistant job, Emily used a few strategies that paid off. “The tactic I found most effective was having a modern, concise cover letter that demonstrated research of the company and, through that research, showcased how my experience and education would best fit that company.”
Emily’s in an entirely new place with her career outlook. “Finding flexible work has changed my perspective on my career options,” she said. “I live in rural America. Right in the center of the Midwest. Before I found FlexJobs, my options for a career were limited due to the lack of positions my degree qualified me for. The positions that were available did not pay enough for me to accept.”
Now, Emily’s concluded that becoming a FlexJobs member was a wise career investment. “I would advise someone to subscribe for at least three months! The membership is worth every penny you invest. FlexJobs soon became the only job search site I used.”
