Woman Changes Careers, Finds Job With Work-Life Balance

At FlexJobs, we know there’s no limit to the reasons why people want a remote job. We also know there are plenty of reasons why people change careers in their 30s, 40s, or even 50s: to pursue a new passion, needing a new challenge, or wanting a new career path that offers different opportunities.

Sometimes, people want a remote job and a new career. Stephanie P. was looking for a remote job that could not only eliminate her stressful commute, but also help her spend more time with her family. However, she was worried that changing careers and moving to remote work would be difficult to achieve—especially since she’d likely have to restart.

Stephanie joined FlexJobs hoping to find a remote job with a company willing to take on someone as experienced as she was. And, with an updated resume and sharp cover letter, she found just that.

A Stressful Work Life

As a working parent stressed out by her long commute, Stephanie wanted a work-from-home job so she could spend more time with her kids at home. However, it wasn’t just the commute that was a problem. Stephanie was also unhappy in her career.

She joined FlexJobs in search of a position that would eliminate her commute and let her find the work-life balance she was missing. But that meant changing careers, something that, as a Gen Xer, she wasn’t sure she could do. Not only did she think she might be too old, she also worried that prospective employers might think she was overqualified for the jobs she was interested in.

The Right Connection

Stephanie tailored her cover letters and resumes to address any concerns about her “overqualifications.” And it worked! Stephanie found a job with Paragon Planners as a Regional Scheduler. In her 100% remote position, she no longer has to deal with a stressful commute. And because she works a part-time job from home, she can spend more time with her kids.

“I can make my hours fit,” she says of her new, flexible schedule. More importantly, though, Stephanie says she’s “not stressed out and unhappy anymore.”

If Stephanie has learned anything from her FlexJobs membership, it’s that age and experience aren’t nearly as important as happiness. “You’re never too old to try something new, and it’s OK to do something you might be overqualified for if it makes you happy.”
