One of the things we often hear from our members is that they want a remote job to help eliminate their lengthy commute. Sometimes the job seekers who reach out are even extreme commuters, traveling at least 90 minutes one way!
Carla J. was one of those super commuters (“was” being the key word). Thanks to FlexJobs, Carla no longer commutes long distances or for lengthy times. Now Carla has the time she was missing to focus on other things in her life and has a job that she can take with her wherever she goes.
A Morning Person, But…
Carla’s employer did not offer remote work. And, living in a small, rural town didn’t leave her with many local employment options. “I had to commute close to 100 miles round trip daily. My shift was from 6:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., which translated to me having to get up at 4:00 a.m.! I’m a morning person, but that was pushing it.”
Realizing that she couldn’t sustain the commute and couldn’t find work closer to home, Carla joined FlexJobs. But she wasn’t just looking for a remote job that would eliminate her commute. She also wanted a role that would let her support her husband’s role as senior pastor at their church.
With More Time Comes More Opportunity
The long commute made it hard for Carla to be as engaged with her church as she wanted. “My role as a pastor’s wife can be demanding on my time,” she says. But “without the commute, my availability to support the ministry has increased.”
Carla landed a job with Conduent as a Case Language Reader. Her hours are exactly the same as her old job but without the commute. That’s given her back almost four hours every day!
What’s more, with this new job, Carla will be able to continue in her current role, instead of starting over if (and when) her husband is transferred. “Ministry can be similar to military service in that you never know how long you will be in one location. If we are ever called to a different location, my job will come along with me. What a wonderful sense of security!”
More Than Remote Job Postings
Like many job seekers, Carla had doubts about paying for a FlexJobs membership. Now, though, she’s glad that she took the chance. Virtual job fairs helped open up Carla’s job search to career fields she never thought about. “The job fair opened doors in areas that I would not have searched before.”
