Compared to some traditional office settings, working from a home office can feel like a sanctuary. You can create just the right environment that boosts your productivity and provides your favorite creature comforts.
That was the case for our latest FlexJobs success story, a Canadian resident who found a great job working from home.
Not only is Robin H. working remotely, she’s also putting her skills and talents to use as a bilingual tax expert.
Robin works full-time for Intuit Canada, the Canadian affiliate of Intuit, the global powerhouse that provides a slate of financial management and tax preparation services.
Robin’s story is one of the many FlexJobs success stories, all from members who’ve found job search success across 50 different job categories.
Brainstorming a Work-from-Home Career Path
For Robin, an unforeseen career development got her job search going. “I lost my job unexpectedly and was forced to think way outside the box in my job search,” Robin said. “I was so frustrated that I sat down and brainstormed my ideal job scenario, and avoiding office ‘cinematics’ ranked number one.”
A resident of Lethbridge, in Alberta, Canada, Robin is a member of Gen X and a single parent. Her new flexible position has “significantly” changed her life for the better, she said. “I found a great job with an innovative software company, that pays me fairly and offers excellent benefits.”
Robin added: “We work in a fast-paced work environment with lots of opportunities to communicate with colleagues across the country. This opened my eyes to the power of harnessing talent for high-performance companies.”
Flexible Work Has a Broad Positive Impact
Robin said she’s realized many of the benefits of remote work. “As a single parent and [single]-income household, this [flexible job] allows me to eliminate expensive child care, commuting, and restaurant lunch costs, resulting in a significantly better quality of life for my children and me,” she said.
Working from home has also been great for creating an atmosphere where Robin can be more focused and productive. “As a person who picks up on others’ moods and energies very easily, this flex job is a godsend,” Robin said. “I can work peacefully from my home office where the coffee and tea is always perfectly made, and I have my sunny windows, cat, and plants to keep me company, instead of a toxic office environment.”
Another great benefit has been less stress, Robin told us. “My stress level has dropped so markedly since I was hired for this [flexible job], that my health has improved. I could probably give you 50 reasons why this job improves my quality of life.”
Advice and Inspiration for Other Job Seekers
Her FlexJobs success came pretty quickly, Robin acknowledged, but it wasn’t just by happenstance. “I guarantee my story is not typical, but I got my dream job on the first of two applications I made,” she said. “While I believe the heavens were smiling on me that day, I also invested the time in myself to sit down and map out my ideal work scenario until I achieve self-employment and can leave a day job behind.”
Robin offered a great strategy for other job seekers. “Sit down and get really honest with yourself about what you want and what your ideals are. Brainstorming, inventorying, and mind-mapping beforehand helped me to hone in on a high-quality job and make the most of my membership.” Mindful of “non-negotiable” qualities she wanted in a job, Robin spent time researching companies to find a good fit.
“I’m so grateful to have found your website,” Robin wrote. “This is turning out to be a real dream job! I’m sorry I was so late getting back to you with this. Intuit just offered me a one-year contract!”
