Being a parent has never been an easy job. Between making sure the kids stay safe and eat their vegetables, and squeezing in some time for fun (and school!), the day-to-day of parenting can be exhausting. Having a full-time job doesn’t make it any easier.
Finding more time for family is one of the reasons people seek out remote and flexible jobs (and become FlexJobs members). Of course, right now, a job that lets you balance work and home is more important than ever.
Adeola A. wanted a job that could give her that balance. What she found was that a remote job not only helped her balance parenting with working, but working at home helped her become a better employee.
In Search of Balance
Adeola wanted a remote job so she could ditch her commute to have more time with her family. “Being a mother of two,” she says, “work-life balance is very important for me. I prefer to work remotely and save time and energy [from not] commuting back and forth.”
She landed a full-time remote job as a Senior Service Consultant at Wayfair and found the work-life balance she had been craving. However, she also found that losing the commute allowed her to channel that saved time and energy back into her work.
“Working from home has shown that I can be even more productive,” she says. And while that benefits her current employer, Adeola knows that it benefits her, too. “There are several opportunities that I can take advantage of in the job market.”
Having It All
Adeola recommends that working and stay-at-home parents consider a FlexJobs membership, so they don’t have to sacrifice their careers for their family and vice versa. “I would particularly advise stay at home parents to take advantage of FlexJobs. You can have a career and be a great [parent] as well.”
However, Adeola also knows that the job market can be competitive—especially if you’re looking for a remote job these days. “Most employers and hiring managers spend less than a minute to get that first impression from your resume. It has to be really good!” So, she tailored her resume to make sure hiring managers knew that she was the right person for the job.
Balance Is Possible
Right now, it may be harder to achieve true work-life balance until things return to normal. However, with a remote or flexible job, you might be able to find some of the balance you’re missing, and reclaim the time and energy you spend on a commute.
