Do you have a light colored carpet? Is your carpet dirty around the edges? Have you wondered where it comes from? Well, it’s black soot! It’s comprised of dust and dirt that builds-up through time. This is typically caused by lack of vacuuming or regular carpet cleaning and maintenance. Your carpet edges will continue to get darker through time, until it’s cleaned or replaced. But, dirty carpet is not the only affect of dirty carpet. The most obvious affect is your carpet appearance. Next, is the unseen world of dust mites, bacteria and allergens. This is where the situation can begin to get worse! Most people do not realize that these types of household issues grow at a rapid rate. The affects can be sore throat, runny nose, itchy eyes and the common cold. So, to eliminate any health concerns, the carpet must be cleaned or replaced. To those that are willing to do some hard work, here are some tips on cleaning black soot from your carpet edges.
Things you will need:
- Vacuum Cleaner
- Scrub Brush (medium bristle)
- 5 Gallon Bucket
- Mild Detergent
- Wet/Dry Vacuum
- White Cloth
Follow these steps:
First, you will need to remove as much of the soot as possible. The best way of doing so is to use the vacuum cleaner or wet/dry vacuum and begin to clean the soot from the carpet borders. Also, use some force when cleaning, this will help break-up the debris for removal. You will begin to see the dark stains get lighter, the process is working. Continue this process until desired results are achieved.
Fill the bucket with 3 gallons of warm water. Pour half a cup of mild detergent into bucket and stir well. This solution will be concentrated, but you need this high concentration to remove and dissolve the soot. This will make the job much easier! But, you can concentrate the mixture to your desired needs.
Next, dip the scrub brush into the soapy solution and begin to clean the carpet borders. But, do not scrub the carpet too hard or you will damage the carpet fiber. You can use a steady circular motion to begin cleaning. If not, use a motion that you feel comfortable with. You will begin to see the soapy solution turn dark in color. This is the soot releasing from the carpet and into the soapy solution. Continue this process until desired results are achieved.
At this point, you need to extract the dirty solution from the carpet. You are going to use the wet/dry vacuum for this process as well. Your best option is to use the carpet attachment that came with the vacuum. Begin to vacuum dirty solution slowly! This will ensure that the solution is removed completely without too much residue. Be patient with this process, this is where you will begin to see the most results. Continue this process until desired results are achieved.
Last, you need to remove any soapy residue leftover from the cleaning process. Empty your bucket and refill with clean warm water. Dip the scrub brush into the clean water and begin to rinse the carpet in a circular motion. Vacuum immediately after scrubbing! This will ensure that the residue is removed. At this point, the dark soot stains should be removed or lightened considerably! Continue this process until desired results are achieved. If not, have your carpet cleaned professional.
