Communications Specialist – San Antonio, TX


Job Summary

This position provides “digital content curation” to write, edit, and communicate health content and messages as part of the communication team for the Institute for Health Promotion Research (IHPR) at UT Health San Antonio. Overall this position will establish and maintain relationships with key IHPR partners/stakeholders/organizations, internal and external media/online resources to identify, collect, organize, write, edit, and schedule various digital and multimedia content types to promote on the IHPR’s online, social, and email platforms that empower health awareness and drive people toward system and environmental changes that contribute to health equity. In addition to this effort, the successful candidate will also participate in other projects of the Institute for Health Promotion Research as directed, including: writing and editing technical documents, scientific publications, grant proposals, and other various content; creating and delivering scientific abstracts, posters and presentations; social media, mass email, and graphic content creation and management; representing the IHPR at community events and as part of community groups; etc.


Job Duties:

  • Provide digital content curation for certain health topics. Curation involves establishing and maintaining relationships with key partners/stakeholders/organizations for topical fidelity, and mining internal and external media/online resources to identify relevant content, then collecting, organizing, synthesizing, writing, editing, and scheduling digital and multimedia content (blog posts, case studies, resources, informational graphics and images, social media messages, action campaigns, and more).
  • Publish and promote that content on the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio’s online, social, and email platforms, which are designed to empower health awareness and drive people toward system and environmental changes that contribute to health equity. Individuals will utilize phone or in-person contact, cyber mining tools, and knowledge of mass media and social media programs and trends to identify relevant content.
  • The curator then will utilize journalism skills to write and edit content and develop accompanying graphics and action-oriented messages, and promote all this content digitally across on our websites and various e-communication channels, and contribute to the effort to track and interpret metrics for that content.
  • Other writing, editing, and communication tasks as directed.


Education:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public health, technical writing, sociology, political science environmental science, or a related field in the sciences and/or humanities.


Experience:

3-to-5 five years in writing, communications and/or public relations.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).

  • Knowledge and/or strong interest in health awareness, health disparities, environmental health, etc.

  • Strong verbal and written communication/journalism skills, especially in writing for news media, blogs and social media, conducting interviews in person or by phone, and conducting public relations-type activities, alongside demonstrated skills in writing, editing, proofing, and ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written, digital, and video formats.

  • Functional knowledge and personal experience with WordPress.

  • Proficiency in navigating the Internet and utilizing Internet-mining tools (RSS feed readers, etc.) and social media networks (Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and also the latest platforms).

  • Some experience in the field of public health and the sciences, especially in the areas of technical and scientific manuscript, grant, and abstract production.

  • Experience leading or being part of a team of writers, curators, social media content makers or marketers.

  • Experience utilizing the latest tools to measure the impact of digital content, webpages, and social media; particularly with WordPress, Google Analytics, Social Report, Hootsuite, and Symplur Signals.

  • Some experience with data visualization and graphic design software (e.g., Canva, Photoshop, InDesign) to create graphics and infographics.

  • Some eExperience creating slides in PowerPoint.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, WordPress, and various web/e-communications programs (e.g., mass email systems, etc.).

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently or collaboratively to produce high-quality deliverables.

  • Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and an expansive editorial/marketing calendar.
