Research Scientist, Biochemistry job – The Dow Chemical Company – Indianapolis, IN

Dow AgroSciences is seeking a Research Scientist in Biochemistry/Enzymology to join Discovery Crop Protection Biology in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The candidate will participate on multidisciplinary teams focused on the advancement of novel candidates through the discovery pipeline. Detailed mode-of-action (MoA) studies will be utilized to understand mechanisms of inhibition, compound potency and assist in the design of novel scaffolds.

Core Responsibilities:
Utilize demonstrated expertise in biochemistry and chemistry to support multidisciplinary teams in their understanding of structure-activity relationships and to guide synthetic strategies.

Design and execution of biochemical experiments including: molecular cloning, protein purification, and protein analytics, in support of mode-of-action determinations for candidate molecules.

Leverage deep understanding of enzyme kinetics to determine modes of inhibition for novel chemistries.

Define and conduct research across multiple Discovery Crop Protection project areas using in-depth knowledge and proactive application of scientific principles, theory and experimental design with working knowledge in multiple disciplines.

Demonstrate expertise in use of experimental/computational/theoretical methods and data handling.

Participate in the innovation process as it applies to specific projects and contributing to the innovation process through new opportunity identification.

Keep current with developments in relevant area of technology and identify and implement applications which will benefit Dow. Have an in-depth understanding of the patent and journal literature across related areas of technology. Understand and incorporate the competitive landscape in technology mapping.

Mentor junior level scientists and technologists.

Deliver presentations or reports that distill complex ideas into clear results and proposals; communicate appropriately to influence internal and external audiences.

Communicate and appropriately document work in the form of internal reports/presentations and external publications/presentations (when appropriate). Draft and submit patent disclosures as appropriate.

Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) or project leader on large multi-disciplinary project teams to collaborate, provide technical input and deliver results aligned with team deliverables.

Develop strategies for using external contact network; demonstrated influence to external organizations that impact and contribute to Dow AgroSciences success.

Serves as the Environmental Health and Safety advocate for work group, ensuring understanding and adherence to policies and procedures. Leadteam in promotion of best safety practices, habits, and behaviors.


Basic Qualifications:
Doctoral (with or without post-doctoral) degree

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral (with or without post-doctoral) degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry or Molecular Biology or related science

5+ years of relevant experience

Strong track record of publications in related fields (biochemistry/enzymology).

Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

Ability to successfully partner with team members and stakeholders from multiple backgrounds.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Experience in discovery of small molecules with novel mode of action.

Background in plant biochemistry and metabolism.

Proficiency using analytical techniques such as LC-MS, SPR, UV & fluorescence spectroscopies, GC-MS, and NMR.
