Petco Animal Supplies Stores, Inc. has a paid summer internship available in its Corporate Communications department with a focus on social media and content.

The paid internship offers hands-on learning and exposure to core areas of content strategy, including audits, analysis, curation, creation and governance. The ideal candidate is someone who is a digital-native, with a passion for good storytelling and a knack for process. The Social Media & Content Intern will assist the Manager, Social Media & Content, to research, fact-check, create, edit and optimize content for deployment in the Petco Community and distribution to the enterprise that consistently articulates the organization’s mission in alignment with Petco brand strategies. There will also be opportunities to work on projects for the Petco social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and Snapchat.

A successful candidate will assist with a wide-range of content initiatives, both internal and external, to help drive conversion and sales, as well as increase engagement, retention and brand awareness. He or she will be a masterful wordsmith, have a knack for syntax and passion for journalism. We are looking for a passionate storyteller who can help create an emotional connection between our brand and the impact it has on our customers; thereby helping to further establish Petco as the most trusted source for pet parents.


Social Media & Content Intern

will also have a variety of opportunities—depending on interests and strengths—that include, but are not limited to the following areas:

Assisting with content audit and help surface opportunities to monetize community pages that would direct traffic to

Helping to gather images for use in all channels

Assisting with UGC curation (going through #petco on Instagram to curate UGC that we can repurpose for the Petco social channels)

Assisting the Social Media Specialist in scheduling posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Monitoring Twitter’s trending hashtags to see where Petco can further participate

Helping update Pinterest: focus primarily on content (micrographics + infographics)

Assisting with Content and Social Editorial calendar planning

Assisting in building out upcoming Snapchat stories + execution

AEM video organizing

Helping with weekly reports, tracking daily trends and following top news

Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities

Research, fact-check, create, augment, edit and evaluate content for multiple channels, focusing on articles to be published in Petco’s Community—as well as other content for enterprise-wide distribution.

Implement content strategies across all audiences in collaboration with all Petco partners.

Meticulously evaluate existing content articles in the Community and advise on future content pieces.

Use SEO best practices to optimize content and stay

up-to-date with best practices in writing for the web, web usability and business/​industry trends


Work with, and identify internal contributors and subject matter experts for content that spans the total of our pet offerings.

Work closely with internal animal care experts to ensure all content produced meets Petco’s strict guidelines around pet care and verify content is approved for distribution.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Support the department’s work on major projects and campaigns; and support special projects and other activities as assigned or required.

Attend, participate in and report on project brainstorms and planning meetings with cross-functional teams and departments as appropriate.

Assist with administrative tasks as appropriate.

Independently prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes.

Interact professionally and effectively through verbal and written communication with all professional contacts with emphasis on company interests.

Nature of Supervision

The Social Media & Content Intern reports directly to the Manager, Social Media & Content, who provides direction on a day-to-day basis.

Most work product will be reviewed by department project leaders; however, the Social Media & Content Intern is expected to apply good judgment in making independent decisions regarding general direction for all projects and tasks.

Social Media & Content Intern

will support a number of animal care, customer service, product and operational issues and must demonstrate both a keen sensitivity and sense of urgency through coordination of these issues as it relates to social media and content. He/she will also support a number of short- and long-lead plans and campaigns, requiring strong organizational skills, close attention to detail and the ability to shift and adjust to changing direction and program goals/objectives.

Supervisory Responsibility

No direct supervisory responsibility, although this position is expected to lead and influence through building effective relationships.


Candidates must be currently enrolled in the final year/semester of a Marketing, Journalism, Communications or related degree program at a San Diego university.

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. The ability to grasp, digest and communicate complex information to both internal and external audiences in a clear, timely and effective manner.

Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple demanding initiatives concurrently.

Strong team player with the ability to work comfortably with people of diverse skills, levels, experience and personalities.

Excellent problem solving ability and decision-making judgment.

Demonstrated ability to work with a strong sense of urgency, a high degree of initiative, and the ability to support and participate in cross-functional projects and teams.

The ability to work comfortably in a highly dynamic, fast-paced corporate environment where a high degree of flexibility is required.

Excellent computer skills and the ability to use technology to ensure consistent and constant communications.

Work Environment

Most job duties are performed while seated indoors

in an office environment with little or no exposure to hazards, however occasional travel may be required.


Primary interaction will be Corporate Communications team leadership and colleagues, as well as additional internal clients, including but not limited to Marketing, Animal Care, Merchandising and other teams as appropriate, as well as individual store locations regarding publicity events and marketing campaigns.
